While trying to eke out a living among the dead Rupa stumbles across a mystery. For an agreed upon fee, and you have to establish this in advance with the ghosts to make sure they stick to the deal, she will pass their wishes, suggestions, grievances, and advice along to their living relatives. She acts as a go-between carrying messages from the dead to their living relatives. But Rupa isn’t working at the local MacDonalds – doesn’t exist anymore anyway – she’s plying a slightly more esoteric trade. While the genre has been mined to the extent an original take might seem impossible to find, Huchu has managed to create something new and fresh.Įdinburgh in some unknown future after the collapse of, well just about everything, and 14 year old, nearly 15, Rupa is out trying to make enough money to keep her grandma and little sister housed and fed. L Huchu, published by Macmillan Books, is the first book in the very promising “Edinburgh Nights” Young Adult dystopian future series. (Which is nice to see, there are some novels I have read where Isabelle and Ferdinand don’t even play a role in her upbringing, or are being portrayed as cold blooded parents). You do see glimpses of the young naive girl who was used to being loved, and coddled by her mother and father. The way Catherine is written in this book is well done and shows her gracefully turning into the strong woman she would become later in her life. If you’re a Tudor fanatic the story isn’t anything new, but different style of writing and the way Catherine is portrayed is always something interesting to read. The story does centralize more on Catherine’s life before she became Queen. Micha has been such a wonderful character from the very beginning, all of his struggles to become the person he was born to be and to find people who will accept him for who he is have paid off and now he has created a wonderful family for himself with Drystan, Cyan, Maske and more. Some things possibly tied up a little too easily but overall I was happy with the way it ended and I'm very glad I invested the time to read the series. I still don't feel quite ready to say goodbye to this world or these characters but I do think this was a fitting end to the series and it did answer all of the biggest questions that had been raised in previous books. I first fell in love with Micha and Drystan way back in 2013 when Pantomime was first released so I went into Masquerade with mixed feelings from the excitement that we were FINALLY going to get a conclusion to their story to the sadness that the journey was nearing an end. “We knew we wanted to do something that was just fun.”Īs they started writing the first couple of chapters, they could tell it wasn’t working. “We just couldn’t imagine writing a book that took place in an office or a coffee shop,” Hobbs said. Their perspectives changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when California - where Billings is based - went back on lockdown. When they started writing, the main characters’ roles were reversed, with Lily a city woman and Leo the makeshift treasure hunter. “I think we’ve had the most fun writing that book of any books that we’ve ever written,” Billings said. Then Leo Grady, a long-lost love, shows up with a group of friends to take one of her tours, and the spark of reconnection sets Lily and Leo off on a wild ride. The heroine, Lily Wilder, uses her father’s hidden (and fake) treasure maps to guide tourists through the red rock canyons of southern Utah. They started writing it in 2021, based on an idea each writer said they’ve had for a long time but never really knew what to do with until now. ( “Autoboyography,” published in August 2018, is a coming-of-age LGBTQ romance set in Provo “In a Holidaze,” published in October 2020, is a Christmas love story that happens in Park City.) “Something Wilder” is the pair’s third romance novel set in Utah.
